The mission of the Birmingham Unified Hockey Booster Board is to provide the support necessary to run a successful hockey program across the unified public high schools in Birmingham.
Our goal is to charge a reasonable fee to participating players, provide a positive and memorable experience for our high school players, support charitable efforts in the community and each year grow our program.
The board coordinates and engages in activities related to:
- logistical support for coaches
- gameday support and operations
- team photos and game videos
- website development and updating
- general fundraising for the program
- publishing a gameday program highlighting the BU program and our sponsors
- leading charitable efforts
- coordinating and purchasing BU apparel, jerseys, and equipment
- running team events, such as the Alumni game, Middle School skate, Public Safety Night, Charity game, and Senior night
- various operations and logistics tasks of running a program
- encouraging parent involvement
- developing a budget, then monitoring and paying all fees related to Varsity program
- support the coaches in organizing summer camps, and all non-season activities on and off ice
- putting on a puck drop meeting, early season icebreaker party and team banquet
- organize team pasta parties
- general communication on the program to all interested parties
- assisting in recruiting new prospects
From a financial perspective, our goal is to ensure the program is financially stable while supporting the needs of a high quality high school hockey program.

- coordinate parent volunteers using SignUp Genius
- collect score sheets after each game
- maintain BU section of MIHS Hockey Hub website
- Input game statistics into BU and Hockey Hub websites
Treasurer (Greg Bloom)
- collect all monies for team activities
- lead budget planning
- coordinate and file 501C3 paperwork and taxes
- present monthly financial report at board meeting
Publicity (Jen Zachary)
- send BU news and game results to middle and high schools and District e-news
- contact local newspapers for coverage
Graphics and Art (Chuck Penoza)
- coordinate team photos
- create BU gameday programs with artwork
- create flyers and posters for all BU events
Programs / Advertising Fundraiser (Silvia Acciaioli / Chuck Penoza)
- contact returning players in September to start fundraising
- remind and track all sales
- coordinate with Graphics on program creation
Head Videographer (OPEN)
- coordinate taping of Varsity games for the season
- put on website for review by players and coaches
- create end of season video

Coach Responsibilities (Zack Warson)
- run try-outs and select Varsity teams
- make all coaching and player-related decisions including ice time
- hire assistant coaches
- select captains
- secure practice and game ice
- arrange off-ice / dryland training
- schedule league and non-league games
- request school buses as needed for the season
- give schools list of players that need to leave early for games
- coordinate scheduleing of referees for Varsity games with athletic director
- plan and implement off-season camps, practices, games, meetings, and work-outs
- schedule non-team coaches for Fall and Spring events
